In all known radioactive transformation either an alpha or a beta particle i.e never both or more than one of each kind is emitted by the atom, when a radioactive atom emits an alpha particle a new atom is formed whose mass number is less by four unit and atomic number less by 2 unit than these of the parents atom, when a radioactive atom emits a beta particle the new atom is formed has the same mass number but the atomic number is increase by one unit
When radioactive atom emits gamma rays so there is no charge in mass number and atomic number that is the daughter nucleus has same mass number and atomic number of their parents nuclus.

Alpha decay is a type of radioactive decay in which an atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle i.e He nucleus and there by transform or decay into an atom with mass number i.e reduce by four and then atomic number is reduce by two, an alpha particle is identical tool the nucleus of a ‘He’ atom which consist of two proton and two neutron, alpha decay occur in very heavy element like uranium, Thorium and Radium the nuclei of these atom have a lot more neutron in their nuclei than proton which makes these element neutron rich, the richness makes alpha decay possible.
The different radioactive element emits alpha particles with different energy and ranges, Range of alpha particle is define as the distance through which an alpha particle traveled in a substance before coming to rest is called the range of alpha particle in that substance.
